We made it! It’s 2017, and this first month will set the tone for the rest of the year. With that in mind, we wanted to share 10 new (or new to us) and incredible things or ideas we’re already obsessed with, that we think will help you start your new year!
My first item is the Magic Black Ice Exfoliating Mask by Arcona. I was introduced to this California-based company almost 10 years ago by my best friend and immediately fell in love. The company focuses on “active ingredients”, aka products that really improve the quality of your skin, and their new mask focuses on improving skin clarity. It’s made of Icelandic volcanic sand! The sand acts as a magnet to attract congestion and excess oil, while charcoal purifies and minimizes the appearance of pores. I’ve only used it twice and already I can see the difference. If skin care is on your list of things you want to improve in 2017, I highly recommend it.
My second favorite thing this month is the perfect little reminder to help you stay focused all year. MantraBands, another California-based company, makes bracelets bearing phrases to provide you with a daily reminder of how awesome you are, give you peace, or just make you laugh. For my bracelet, I chose “live laugh love” in rose gold (of course☺). All their bands come in silver, gold, and rose gold. I love that every time I check the time, I also get a little pick-me-up and reminder that there is no one in the world like me.
Now you know for my third pick, ya girl always has her sights set on a designer handbag. This month, the lady that caught my eye is by Givenchy. It’s called the Horizon, which I think is perfect for the year of going beyond the horizon and dreaming/working for what makes you really happy. (Yes, I see all this when I see this handbag. #Ihaveaproblem) It comes in varying sizes from large to mini, the fabric is available in leather as well as grained calfskin, and the color options are the best part by far: black, oxblood, caramel, nude pink, indigo blue, khaki, and red. Do us both a solid and pick this up. Oh, and name her well!
Trust me, I’m a stiletto girl to the core, but my fourth pick, the block heel, has really peaked my interest lately. The 2017 resort runway collections have previewed block sandals and pumps with quick personality and character. You can find almost any color, and all of your favorite designers are putting their own personal adornment touch on each pair. The other wonderful thing about the block heel is that it usually doubles the amount of time you can walk around in that shoe. Go figure.
My last pick for January is also a challenge. For one month, I’ve decided to cut sugar from my diet. Why? Well, to be completely honest, I’ve noticed that the amount of sugar I was consuming on a daily basis was “excessive”, and that’s putting it mildly. I was having a sugar breakfast, a latte, several bags of candy through the workday, a glass of wine at the end of the day, and definitely a dessert. I was beginning to notice a dependency to all of sugar consumption. I wasn’t sleeping great and I only had enough energy to make it to my next sugar fix. So over the Christmas break, I had a conversation with my incredible sister-in-love (who lost 40 pounds in 2016), and with her encouragement decided this is something I really want to do. And because information always helps me focus and strengthens my resolve, I will also be reading The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes. Finally, to add a little bit of accountability, I’m going to be vlogging about the best and worst of this sugar cleanse on IG. So if you have a second, send me a little encouragement! It’s going to be a long month. ☺
Who would have thought, after all this time seeing various ’80s and ’90s movies from childhood, that I would actually be interested in not just a flat shoe—but a boot! I had to clutch my pearls just at the thought of it, but being a part of fashion, I have learned that stepping outside of your comfort zone is always the hardest part. However far left (or right) from your fashion perspective, it is always good to try something new now and again. Dr. Martens came out with a new style (I like to think they considered the fashionista such as myself) in a lighter boot and vegan construction. So not only are they not weighing you down, but you can walk tall with stylish, cruelty-free confidence.
I have always had a fascination with cultural influence in fashion. Growing up in a predominately African-American city, I became aware that we were missing perspective—the ‘where we came from to know where we’re going’ type of thing. I remember a small community of immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, and they always had a joyous approach to what they wore. I love the colorful vibrant expressions of personal style while paying homage to the ancestors who cultivated the look. So when I was introduced to “The Wrap Life”, I knew the prints and fabrics represented my personality—and hey, it’s a great solution to a bad hair day! So I loooove headwraps.
It wasn’t until recently that I decided to branch out of my comfort zone for certain perfumes. I stumbled on My Burberry during a sample sale, and this has been my staple scent this fall/winter. What I love most about it? The lasting musk has a top note of bergamot that keeps it quite feminine.
I love to have notebooks laying around the house, but especially next to my bed—when you have those a-ha moments, you need to take those ideas to paper. What I love about these notebooks is the personality and how they are designed to match your personal aesthetic.
How gorgeous is this palette?? This women-owned business first stepped into the scene with diverse shades of liquid lipsticks, following up with single shadows in early 2016. This palette has taken a number one spot in the hearts of most makeup enthusiasts; with its highlight-pigmented shades and beautiful color array, this “queen” vibe is captivating.
