(INSERT SCREAMING EMOJI) I am so incredibly thrilled with my new, full, microbladed brows!!
Let me back up. I have been living in Seattle for about 3 years and I still never had a “brow girl”. I went with the old faithful methods of plucking and maintaining my humble brows because as a makeup artist, I knew the basics of not allowing them to get unruly. It wasn’t until this summer that SMALLZ put me in contact with Erika Kennedy (insert heavenly gates opening). Erika is SO skillful in her craft. I have always been a not-so-hairy person, so the voluptuous brows I yearned for were never really in my grasp, until I met ERIKA! (Kennedy Skincare)
I have only required fullness, figuring that we can’t all have the dream brows, right? It meant monthly maintenance and a little tinting every now and again, so when I did go, I always felt so confident with it, and the service was always impeccable. Brow maintenance just felt like catching up with a friend in the most serene environment.
Fast-forward to Erika introducing me to microblading.
WHAT IS MICROBLADING?
Also known as microstroking, it’s an advanced brow embroidery technique in which a superfine row of needles is used to create thin, hair-like marks on the skin, which last up to 18 months.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
In the line of semi-permanent makeup, the manual process of inserting pigment into the upper layers of skin creates the desired fullness and shape of the eyebrows. The effects last up to 12 months, after which the pigment fades, leaving the skin and your natural brows exactly as they were.
HOW DOES MICROBLADING WORK?
Small amounts of ink are deposited manually in the superficial layer of the skin and are considered to be a semi-permanent tattoo. Your tattoo will last as long as it’s maintained (with touchups); untouched, the ink will last 1-3 years.
I’ll be honest: I have never taken a permanent or semi-permanent approach to my makeup or grooming needs because I always like to switch it up, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about the time I would get back if my brows were already set and ready to go! Those who know me have heard me quote my motto, “Never leave home without a brow!” It’s just imbedded into my girly DNA.
I scheduled a session with Erika and was soo excited to have her execute a professional brow service that wouldn’t fade within a week or two.
Erika and I met for a two-hour appointment, and first spent time discussing, measuring and sculpting the brows, which ended up being only 30 minutes of the appointment. Upon my arrival, Erika prepped my brows with a numbing cream and let it sit for about 20 minutes to ease any discomfort during the process. She began to do her magic—shaping and sculpting in perfect symmetry as she has always done for me with just threading services, but this was all in preparing for the plant-based dye used in the blade. She proceeded to draw out the border of my brow shape and determine where she would lay the first stroke of the blade—then we were ready to start the blading!
I would have to compare the feeling of the blade similar to, say, getting your brows threaded after 2 months of letting them grow back—OUCH! So the numbing agent was essential—there was a small pinch with every stroke, but nothing unbearable.
Ater my brows were complete, Erika gave me a sterile water base for cleaning my brows a few times a day. I was also told to apply a small layer of Aquaphor to keep from scabbing over, which didn’t happen (so it must have worked).
I can’t stop staring at my eyes—it’s so unreal to see hair strokes and know it’s a semipermanent dye.
I highly recommend getting the service. I don’t know about you other brows ladies or gents out here, but I already set the alarm in the morning with my the new time I’ve gained from no longer having to “put my brows on”!
