Velvet: the Remix

tallz

This fabric cult favorite has come in and out of the fashion scene since the early ’90s, but this season it’s back—stronger and better than ever. Whether done casual or dressed to the nines, velvet is a luxe fabric with limitless possibilities, and currently a fall favorite amongst the trends lately. I personally love the rich hues and elevated appeal it gives to my outfit. My favorite color is green, so when I saw this emerald velvet high-neck number at Zara, I knew it was made for me. Comfortable isn’t even the half of what I would say in describing this dress, but even more that it’s versatile, because I can see myself styling it with skinny jeans and a boot.

I wanted to mix hard and soft without too much distraction in the accessories department. As SMALLZ has told me, quoting the lovely Coco Chanel, “With styling, take off the last piece”—and voilà, that did it! Pairing it with a military-inspired, double-breasted wool trench and structured hat gave me the results of remix that I was going for, while still staying true to my tall frame and not cutting me off at the knee.

#tallzTIP:
Length and proportion are essential when selecting a velvet number, and most definitely when choosing a dress. A piece may be completely gorgeous, but if it doesn’t do much for your figure, the end results can be underwhelming—and with the holidays approaching, underwhelming is not an option.
