Wardrobe Challenge #2: Creating high-fashion looks with only $100!Fashion tallz and SMALLZ
This week, we’re talking about shopping on a budget. Style is definitely a hobby that comes at a price, but it doesn’t always have to break the bank. This week, we’re doing our second #wardrobechallenge and creating high-fashion looks with only $100! Full transparency; we did not include shoes and accessories in our $100 goals. Only clothing.
Now for some people, this is not a problem. For example, my sister is the pinch-pennies queen of shopping and she always looks cute. But for others (cough, points to self), this can seem impossible; I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought a “good” pair of shoes for under $50. So we thought it was important to share a couple tips for smart shopping that we think can help you create your fabulous Tall or Small look without sacrificing brand or quality.
First, we know this topic has different connotations for different people; trust us, no one is about to make you wear your older sister’s or mom’s clothes…unless they have really great taste! But we will say that this is not the same process at all that it used to be. With apps like Poshmark and Tradesy, you can post items you no longer wear and shop for all your favorite brands at huge discounts. And with features like “Make an Offer”, it gives you an additional opportunity to negotiate pricing of the items you like. After all, a penny saved is a penny towards the next item. 🙂
Case in point: I bought a pair of Prada sunglasses on Tradesy, normally $355, for $175. And both sites always have coupons for first-time shoppers as well.
The middle of winter is the perfect time to shop for your summer wardrobe— it’s when retailers are looking to clear out their winter selection and do major markdowns. Subscribe to your favorite department store’s email alerts so you know when you need to head over there—the earlier, the better!
tallz&SMALLZ Tip: Find the item you want online, and then see if it’s available in your nearest stores. A lot of times it will be even cheaper in store than online, because locations have a limited amount of space for product and are really looking to make room.
Shop the ‘Countdown’ Sales
Sites like HauteLook and Gilt are quickly becoming a first choice for frequent shoppers, consistently featuring top brands that you know and love at a substantial discount. The catch: they’re all timed sales, so it’s a snooze-lose situation; but with limited stock, you can grab something that most people won’t have! So when Rebecca Minkoff is on HauteLook, her products will only be shoppable from, say, Friday to Sunday, starting at 10am and ending at 10pm, with a limited number of styles and sizes. Yes, this means that you may have to clear your schedule to be available at a certain time to get the best selection, but often it means that you’re wearing a few-of-a-kind item!
Regardless of your level of budget-shopping expertise, we hope that you will join us this week for our #TSwardrobechallenge #under100 —and share with us some of your own discount tips and tricks! We can’t wait to see how you get creative!
